Demographic situation in Ukraine in January-November 2011

(from Reports "Socio-economic situation of Ukraine in 2011")

    As of the 1st December of 2011 Ukraine's population was estimated at 45644,4 thsd. persons. During January-November 2011 the population decreased by 134,1 thsd. people, that amounted to 3,2 persons per 1000 population. At the same time a natural increase of the population was registered in eight regions of Ukraine: Volyn, Zakarpattya, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Rivne, Chernivtsi, ñity of Kyiv and Sevastopol (from 5,2 to 0,3 persons per 1000 population).

    The population decline by was exclusively due to natural decrease – 149,1 thsd. persons, at the same time the migration gain – 15,0 thsd. persons was registered.

    In comparison with January-November of 2010 the volume of a natural decrease reduced by 32,4 thsd. persons, or from 4,3 to 3,6 persons per 1000 population. A natural decrease of the population was registered in the 22 Ukraine`s regions, but only in the city of Kyiv, Zakarpattya, Rivne, Volyn and Chernivtsi regions a natural increase of the population 4605, 3604, 3235, 816 and 124 persons, respectively) was registered.

    A natural movement of the population in January-November 2011 was characterized by the increase of birth and decrease death rates.A significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live birth remains: 100 deaths per 76 live births.

     There was a significant difference in the birth rate between Ukraine's regions: from 9,0‰ in Sumy region to 15,4 in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 15,2 ‰ in January- November of 2010 to 14,6 - in January- November of 2011. The heighest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (18,5‰), the lowest - in the city of Kyiv (9,6‰).

    In January-November 2011 there were registered 2923 cases of dead births, that is by 92 cases less compared to the corresponding period of the preceding year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age deacreased by 79 cases.

   The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were: certain conditions arising in the perinatal period; congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (congenital abnormalities); external death causes; some infectious and parasitic diseases; diseases of the nervous system; diseases of the respiratory system. There remains a significant part of infants (4,9%) whose death cause was not determined by medical personnel.

     Among death causes of the population of Ukraine in January-November of 2011 as in January-ovember of 2010 the diseases of blood circulatory system ranked first, neoplasms followed second and external causes took third.

    In January-November 2011 in 12 regions there was an increase of migration and in 15 a decrease of migration was observed.

    Almost a half of people arrived in Ukraine have registered their place of residence in 5 regions: in the city of Kyiv, Odesa,Donets`k, Autonomic Republic of Crimea and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.

    Among those who arrived in Ukraine during January-November of 2011 the immigrants from the CIS countries constituted 76,8%, from other countries - 23,2%. Among those who left Ukraine 44,9 % moved to the CIS countries and 55,5% - to other countries.
