Demographic situation in Ukraine in January-July 2011

(from Reports "Socio-economic situation of Ukraine in January-August 2011" )

       As of the 1st August of 2011 Ukraine's population was estimated at 45670,0 thsd. persons. During January-July 2011 the population decreased by 108,5 thsd. people, that amounted to 4,6 persons per 1000 population.

    The population decline by was exclusively due to natural decrease – 118,3 thsd. people, at the same time the migration gain – 9,8 thsd. people was registered.

    Compared to January-July 2010 the volume of a natural decrease grew up by 3,5 thsd. people, or from 4,6 to 5 ‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in the 23 regions of Ukraine, and only in the city of Kyiv, Rivne, Zakarpattya and Volyn` regions a natural increase of the population (1872, 1256, 1150 and 68 people, respectively) was registered.

        A natural movement of the population in January-July 2011 was characterized by the decrease of birth and death rates. A significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live birth remains: 100 deaths per 70 live births.

     There was a significant difference in the birth rate between Ukraine's regions: from 8,7‰ in Sumy region to 14,6 in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 15,3 ‰ in January-July of 2010 to 15,0 - in January-July of 2011. The heighest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (18,8‰), the lowest - in the city of Kyiv (9,9‰).

    In January-July 2011 there were registered 1790 cases of dead births, that is by 134 cases less compared to the corresponding period of the preceding year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age deacreased by 52 cases.


   The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were: certain conditions arising in the perinatal period; congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (congenital abnormalities); external death causes; some infectious and parasitic diseases; diseases of the nervous system; diseases of the respiratory system as illustrated in the diagram below. There remains a significant part of infants (4,7 %.) whose death cause was not determined by medical personnel.

     Among death causes of the population of Ukraine in January-July of 2011 as in January-July of 2010 the diseases of blood circulatory system ranked first, neoplasms followed second and external causes took third.

        In January-July 2011 in 21 regions and in 6 regions there was a decrease of migration.

    Almost a half of people arrived in Ukraine have registered their place of residence in 5 regions: in the city of Kyiv, Odesa, Autonomic Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.

    Among those who arrived in Ukraine during January-July of 2011 the immigrants from the CIS countries constituted 77,4 %, from other countries - 22,6%. Among those who left Ukraine 43,5 % moved to the CIS countries and 56,5 % - to other countries.
