Demographic situation in Ukraine in January-May 2011

(from Reports "Socio-economic situation of Ukraine in January-June 2011")

    As of the 1st April of 2011 Ukraine's population was estimated at 45687,2 thsd. people. During January-May of 2011 the population decreased by 91,4 thsd. people, that amounted to 4,8 ‰.

   The population decline by was exclusively due to natural decrease – 98,4 thsd. people, at the same time the migration gain of 7.0 thsd. people was registered.

   The indicator of the natural decrease of the population remained on the level of the same period of the last year - 5,2 ‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in the 24 Ukraine`s regions, and only in Kiyv city, Rivne and Zakarpattya regions a natural increase of the population (821, 530 and 352 persons, respectively) was registered.

    A natural movement of the population in January-May 2011 was characterized by the decrease of birth and death rates. A significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live birth remains: 100 deaths per 66 live births.

5 The information on the number of divorces is presented according to the data of the state organs of registration of acts of civil status without taking into account divorces performed in legal form (according to the Law of Ukraine " On State Registration of Acts of Civil Status" dated the 1st of July 2010, ¹ 2398-VI).

     There was a significant difference in the birth rate between Ukraine's regions: from 8,5 ‰ in Luhans`k region to 14,3 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 15,6 ‰ in January-May of 2010 to 15,5 ‰ - in January-May of 2011. The highest death rate was registered in Chirnihiv region (19,4‰), the lowest - in Kyiv city (10,1‰).

    In January-May of 2011 there were registered 1224 dead births, that is by 95 cases less in comparison with the corresponding period of the preceding year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age deacreased by 38 cases.

   The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were: certain conditions arising in the perinatal period; congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (congenital abnormalities); external death causes; some infectious and parasitic diseases; diseases of the nervous system; diseases of the respiratory system as illustrated in the diagram below. There remains a significant part of infants (5,3 %.) whose death cause was not determined by medical personnel.

     Among death causes of the population of Ukraine in January-May of 2011 as in January-May of 2010 the diseases of blood circulatory system ranked first, neoplasms followed second and external causes took third.

    In January-May of 2011 in Ukraine the migration gain decreased in comparison with January-May of 2010 by 0,2 thsd. people. The mifgration gain was registered in 16 regions and in 11 regions there was a decrease of migration.

    Almost a half of people arrived in Ukraine have registered their place of residence in 5 regions: Odesa, Kyiv city, Autonomic Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.

    Among those who arrived in Ukraine during January-May of 2011 the immigrants from the CIS countries constituted 77,8 %, from other countries - 22,2%. Among those who left Ukraine 42,6 % moved to the CIS countries and 57,4 % - to other countries.
