Demographic situation in Ukraine in January-April 2011

( from "Reports "Socio-economic situation of Ukraine in January-May 2011" )

    As of the 1st May of 2011 Ukraine's population was estimated at 45706,1 thsd. people. During January-April of 2011 the population decreased by 72,4 thsd. people that amounted to 4,8 persons per 1000 population.

   The decline of the country's population was exclusively due to natural decrease - 77,8 thsd. people, at the same time, the migration gain of 5,4 thsd. people was registered.

   In comparison with January-April of 2010 the volume of a natural decrease reduced by 2,7 thsd. people, or from 5,3 ‰ to 5,1 ‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in the 24 Ukraine`s regions, but only in Kyiv city, Rivne and Zakarpattya regions a natural increase of the population (870, 503 and 282 persons, respectively) was registered.

    A natural population movement in January-April of 2011 was characterized by birth rate and death rate decrease. There remains a significant excess of deaths over live births: 100 deaths per 67 live births.

5 The information on the number of divorces is presented according to the data of the state organs of registration of acts of civil status without taking into account divorces performed in legal form (according to the Law of Ukraine " On State Registration of Acts of Civil Status" dated the 1st of July 2010, ¹ 2398-VI). .


     There was a significant difference in the birth rate between Ukraine's regions: from 8,7 ‰ in Luhans`k, Sumy and Chernihiv regions to 14,5 ‰ in Rivne region, that reflect the data presented in the table.

The death rate decreased from 15,9 ‰ in January-April of 2010 to 15,6 ‰ - in January-April of 2011. The highest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (19.6 ‰), the lowest - in Kyiv city (10.1 ‰).

    In January-April of 2011 there were registered 974 cases of dead births that is by 89 less in comparison with the same period of the previous year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age decreased by 33 cases.

    The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were: certain conditions arising in the perinatal period; congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (congenital abnormalities); ternal death causes; diseases of the nervous system; some infectious and parasitic diseases; diseases of the respiratory system as illustrated in the diagram below. There remains a significant part of infants (5.5 %.) whose death cause remained unestablished by medical personnel.

     Among death causes of the population of Ukraine in January-March of 2011 as in January-March of 2010 he diseases of blood circulatory system ranked first, neoplasms followed second and external causes took third.

    In January-April of 2011 in Ukraine the migration gain decreased in comparison with January-April of 2010 by 0,5 thsd. people. The miration gain was registered in 16 regions and in 11 regions there was the reduction of migration.

    A half of people arrived in Ukraine have registered their place of residence in 5 regions: Odesa, Kyiv city, Autonomic Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.

    Among those who arrived in Ukraine during January-April of 2011 the immigrants from the CIS countries constituted 77,8%, from other countries - 22,2%. Among those who left Ukraine 41,5% moved to the CIS countries and 58,5% - to other countries.
