As of the 1st March of 2011 Ukraine's population was estimated at 45745,2 thsd. people. During January-February 2011 the population decreased by 33,3 thsd. people that amounted to 4,5 persons per 1000 population.
     The population decline by 36,4 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease,at the same time, the migration gain of 3,1 thsd. people was registered.
     In comparison with January-February of 2010 the volume of a natural decrease went down by 6.2 thsd. people, or from 5,7 ‰ to 4,9 ‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in the 24 Ukraine`s regions, but only in Kyiv city, Rivne and Zakarpattya regions a natural increase of the population (579, 308 and 269 persons, respectively) was registered.
     
A natural population movement in January-February of 2011 was characterized by birth rate increase and deaths rate decrease. A significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live birth remains: 100 deaths per 69 live births.

 The death rate decreased from 16,4 ‰ in January-February of 2010
  to 15,7 - in January-February of 2011. The highest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (19.7 ‰), the lowest - in Kyiv city (10.0 ‰).

In January-February 2011 there were registered 446 dead births, that is by 49 cases less in comparison with the same period of the preceding year and  somewhat decreased the number of infant deaths under 1 year of age. 
    The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were:  certain conditions arising in the perinatal period; congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (congenital abnormalities); external death causes; some infectious and parasitic diseases; diseases of the nervous system; diseases of the respiratory system as illustrated in the diagram below.  There remains a significant part of infants (4,8 %.) whose death cause remained unestablished.
 
                  
Among death causes of the population of Ukraine in January-February of 2011 as in January-February of 2010 the diseases of blood circulatory system ranked first, neoplasms followed second and external causes took third.

In January-February of 2011 in Ukraine in comparison with the period January-February of 2010 the migration gain has incresed by 0,2 thds. people. The migration gain was registered in 17 regions, in 10 regions there was a decrease of migration.

Almost half of people arrived in Ukraine have registered their place of residence in 5 regions: Odesa, Kyiv city, Autonomic Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.
    Among those who arrived in Ukraine during January-February of 2011 the immigrants from the CIS countries comprised 77.7 %, from other countries - 22,3%. Among those who left Ukraine 47.5 % moved to the CIS countries and 52.5 % - to other countries.
