Demographic situation in Ukraine in January 2011

(from "Reports "Socio-economic situation of Ukraine in January-February 2011" )

    As of the 1st February of 2011 Ukraine's population was estimated at 45760,1 thsd. people. During January 2011 the population decreased by 18,5 thsd. people that amounted to 4.7 persons per 1000 population.

    The population decline by 20,0 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same time, the migration gain of 1,5 thsd. people was registered.

    In comparison with January of 2010 the volume of a natural decrease decreased by 4.6 thsd. people, or from 6,3 ‰ to 5.1 ‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in the 24 Ukraine`s regions, but only in Zakarpattya region, Rivne region and Kyiv city a natural increase of the population (192, 167 and 129 persons, respectively) was registered..

    A natural population movement in January of 2011 was characterized by birth rate increase and deaths rate decrease. A significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live birth remains: 100 deaths per 67 live births.

5 From July 2010 the information is presented according to the data of the state organs of registration of acts of civil status without taking into account divorces performed in legal form (according to the Law of Ukraine " On State Registration of Acts of Civil Status " dated the 1st of July 2010, ¹ 2398-VI).


     There was a significant difference in the birth rate between Ukraine's regions: from 8.1 ‰ in Chernihiv region to 15.4 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 16,4 ‰ in January of 2010 to 15,7 ‰ - in January of 2011. The highest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (19.7 ‰), the lowest - in Kyiv city (10.3 ‰).

    In January 2011 there were registered 234 dead births, that is by 51 cases less in comparison with the corresponding period of the preceding year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age increased by 28 cases.

    The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were: certain conditions arising in the perinatal period; congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (congenital abnormalities); external death causes; diseases of the nervous system; some infectious and parasitic diseases; diseases of the respiratory system as illustrated in the diagram below. There remains a significant part of infants (5.7 %.) whose death cause remained unestablished.

     Among death causes of the population of Ukraine in January of 2011 as in January of 2010 the diseases of blood circulatory system ranked first, neoplasms followed second and external causes took third.

    In January of 2011 in Ukraine the migration gain was registered in 15 regions and in 12 regions there was a decrease of migration.

    Almost half of people arrived in Ukraine have registered their place of residence in 5 regions: Odesa, Kyiv city, Autonomic Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.

    Among those who arrived in Ukraine during January of 2011 the immigrants from the CIS countries constituted 75.9 %, from other countries - 24,1%. Among those who left Ukraine 45.8 % moved to the CIS countries and 44.2 % - to other countries.
