Ukraine's population was estimated at 45831.4 thsd. people on 1st September 2010. During the period January-August 2010 the population decreased by 131.6 thsd. people that amounted to 4.3 persons per 1000 population.
The decline in population by 142.1 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same time the increase of the population by 10.5 thsd. people due to migration was registered.
In comparison with the period January-August 2009 the volume of a natural decrease increased by 5.8 thsd. people or from 4.5 ‰ to 4.6‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in 23 Ukraine`s regions, but only in Zakarpattya region, Kyiv city, Rivne and Volyn` regions a natural increase of the population (1822, 1770, 1399 and 480 people, respectively) was registered.
A natural population movement in January-August 2010 was characterized by both birth and death rates decrease, and also by a significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live births: 100 deaths per 70 live births.

from 8.8 ‰ births in Sumy region to 14.8 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 15.6 ‰ in January-August 2009 to 15.4 ‰ in January-August 2010. The highest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (19.9 ‰), the lowest - in Kyiv city (10.5 ‰).

In January-August 2010 there were registered 2222 dead births that is by 10 cases less in comparison with the relevant period of last year. The number of infant death under 1 year of age decreased by 146 cases.
The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were certain conditions arising in the perinatal period, congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal anomalies, external causes, diseases of nervous system, diseases of the respiratory system, some infectious and parasitic diseases as illustrated in the figure below. There remains a significant part of infants (4.3 %.) whose death cause has not been established.
Among deaths causes in the period January-August 2010 as in the period January-August 2009 the first place occupied the diseases of blood circulatory system that were followed by neoplasms and external causes.

The rate of marriages in the period January-June 2010 compared to the relevant period of last year decreased from 6.4 ‰ to 6.0 ‰, and the rate of divorces increased from 3.0 ‰ to 3.1 ‰.
In January-August 2010 in Ukraine the migration balance increased compared to the relevant period of 2009 by 1.8 thsd. people. The increase of migration was registered in 19 regions and the decrease of migration in 8 regions.

Almost half of the migrants who arrived to Ukraine registered their place of living in 5 regions (Odesa region, Kyiv city, Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Kharkiv regions).
Among arrived in Ukraine in the period January-August 2010 the emmigrants from CIS countries constituted 77.7 %, from other countries - 22.3 %. Among those who left the country 52.5 % moved to CIS countries and 47.5 % to other countries.
