Ukraine's population was estimated at 45859.8 thsd. people on 1st July 2010. During the period January-June 2010 the population decreased by 103.1 thsd. people that amounted to 4.5 persons per 1000 population.
The decline in population by 111.8 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same time the increase of the population by 8.7 thsd. people due to migration was registered.
In comparison with the period January-June 2009 the volume of a natural decrease reduced by 10.0 thsd. people or from 5.3 ‰ to 4.9 ‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in 23 Ukraine`s regions, and only in Zakarpattya, Rivne, Volyn` regions and Kyiv city a natural increase of the population (1111, 611, 36 and 1306 people, respectively) was registered.
A natural population movement in January-June 2010 was characterized by both birth and death rates decrease, and also by a significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live births: 100 deaths per 68 live births.

In January-June 2010 there was a significant difference in the birth rate:
from 8.5 ‰ births in Sumy region to 14.4 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 16.2 ‰ in January-June 2009 to 15.5 ‰ in January-June 2010. The highest deaths rate was registered in Chernihiv region (19.9 ‰), the lowest – in Kyiv city (10.2 ‰).

In January-June 2010 there were registered 1634 dead births. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age decreased by 185 cases.
The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were certain conditions arising in the perinatal period, congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal anomalies, external causes, diseases of nervous system, diseases of the respiratory system, some infectious and parasitic diseases as illustrated in the figure below. There remains a significant part of infants (4.1 %.) whose death cause has not been established.
Among death causes in January-June 2010 as in January-June 2009 the first place occupied the diseases of blood circulatory system that were followed by neoplasms and external causes.

The rate of marriages in the period January-June 2010 in comparisons with the relevant period of last year decreased from 5.3 ‰ to 4.8 ‰, and the rate of divorces increased from 3.0 ‰ to 3.1 ‰.
In the period January-June 2010 the migration balance in Ukraine increased by 8.7 thsd. people (in the corresponding period of 2009 - 7.4 thsd. people). The increase of migration was registered in 18 regions and its decrease in 9 regions.

Almost half of arrived to Ukraine indicated their place of living in 5 regions: Odesa, Kyiv city, Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.
Among arrived to Ukraine in the period January-June 2010 the immigrants from CIS countries constituted 77.9 %, from other countries - 22.1 %. Among those who left Ukraine 54.1 % moved to CIS countries and 45.9 % to other countries.
