Ukraine's population was estimated at 45871.7 thsd. people on 1st June 2010. During the period January-May 2010 the population decreased by 91.2 thsd. people that amounted to 4.8 persons per 1000 population.
The decline in population by 98.4 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same time the increase of the population by 7.2 thsd. people due to migration was registered.
In comparison with the period January-May 2009 the volume of a natural decrease reduced by 6.8 thsd. people or from 5.5 ‰ to 5.2 ‰. A natural decrease of population was registered in 24 Ukraine`s regions, but only in Zakarpattya, Rivne regions and Kyiv city a natural population increase (865, 462 and 810 people, respectively) was registered.
A natural population movement in January-May 2010 was characterized by both birth and death rates decrease, and also by a significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live births: 100 deaths per 67 live births.

During the period January-May 2009 there was a significant difference in the births rate: from 8.3 ‰ in Sumy region to 14.4 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 16.4 ‰ in January-May 2009 to 15.6 ‰ in January-May 2010. The highest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (19.9 ‰), the lowest - in Kyiv city (10.2 ‰).

In January-May 2010 there were registered 1319 dead births that is by 40 cases less in comparison with to the relevant period of last year. At the same time the number of dead births increased from 6.5 ‰ in January-May, 2009 to 6.6 ‰ in January-May 2010. The number of infant death under 1 year of age decreased by 152 cases or from 9.3 ‰ to 8.8 ‰.
As the leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age remain certain conditions arising in the perinatal period, congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal anomalies, external causes, diseases of nervous system as illustrated in the diagram below. There remains a significant part of infants (4.3 %.) whose death cause has not been established.
Among deaths causes in the period January-May 2010 as in the period January-May 2009 the first place occupied the diseases of blood circulatory system that were followed by neoplasms and external causes.

The rate of marriages in the period January-May 2010 compared to the relevant period of last year decreased from 4.8 ‰ to 4.6 ‰, and the rate of divorces remained at the last year level - 3.0 ‰.
In January-May 2010 as in the relevant period of 2009 the migration balance increase by 7.2 thsd. people was observed. The increase of migration was registered in 19 regions and its decrease in 8 regions.

Almost half of arrived to Ukraine registered their place of living in 5 regions: Odesa, Kyiv city, Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.
Among arrived in Ukraine in the period January-May 2010 the emmigrants from CIS countries constituted 77.7 %, from other countries – 22.1 %. Among those who left the country 53.9 % moved to CIS countries and 46.1 % - to other countries.
