Ukraine's population was estimated at 45888.4 thsd. people on 1 st May 2010. During the period January-April 2010 the population decreased by 74.6 thsd. people that amounted to 4.9 persons per 1000 population.
The decline in population by 80.5 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same time the increase of the population by 5.9 thsd. people due to migration was registered.
In comparison with the period January-April 2009 the volume of a natural decrease reduced by 7.0 thsd. people or from 5.8 ‰ to 5.3 ‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in 24 Ukraine`s regions, but only in Zakarpattya, Rivne regions and Kyiv city a natural increase of the population ( 646, 346 and 682 people, respectively) was registered.
A natural population movement in January-April 2010 was characterized by both birth and death rates decrease, and also by a significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live births: 100 deaths per 67 live births.

During the period January-April 2010 there was a significant difference in the birth rate:
from 8.5 ‰ births in Sumy region to 14.5 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 16.8 ‰ in January-April 2009 to 15.9 ‰ in January-April 2010. The highest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (20.3 ‰), the lowest - in Kyiv city (10.4 ‰).

In January-April 2010 there were registered 1063 dead births that is by 26 cases less in comparison with the relevant period of last year. The number of infant death under 1 year of age decreased by 102 cases.
The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were certain conditions arising in the perinatal period, congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal anomalies, external causes, diseases of nervous system, diseases of the respiratory system, some infectious and parasitic diseases as illustrated in the figure below. There remains a significant part of infants (4.3 %.) whose death cause has not been established.
Among deaths causes in the period January-April 2010 as in the period January-April 2009 the first place occupied the diseases of blood circulatory system that were followed by neoplasms and external causes.

The rate of marriages in the period January-April 2010 compared to the relevant period of the last year decreased from 4,8 ‰ to 4.7 ‰, and the rate of divorces remained at the last year level - 3.1 ‰.
In January-April 2010 as in the relevant period of 2009 in Ukraine the migration balance was 5.9 thsd. people. The increase of migration was registered in 18 regions and the decrease of migration in 9 regions.

Over half the migrants who arrived in Ukraine registered their place of living in 5 regions (Odesa region, Kyiv city, Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Kharkiv regions).
Among arrived in Ukraine in the period January-April 2010 the emmigrants from CIS countries constituted 78.2 %, from other countries - 21.8 %. Among those who left the country 55.5 % moved to CIS countries and 44.5 % to other countries.
