Demographic situation in Ukraine as of January 2010

    Ukraine's population was estimated at 45939.8 thsd. people on 1st February 2010. In January 2010 the population decreased by 23.1 thsd. people that amounted to 5.9 persons per 1000 population.

The decline in population by 24.6 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same time the increase of the population by 1.5 thsd. people due to migration was registered.

In comparison with January 2009 the volume of a natural decrease increased by 4.2 thsd. people or from 7.4 ‰ to 6.3 ‰. A natural decrease of population was registered in 25 Ukrainian regions, but only in Zakarpattya and Rivne regions a natural increase of the population (110 and 56 people, respectively) was registered.
    A natural population movement in January 2010 was characterized by both birth and death rates decrease, and also by a significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live births: 100 deaths per 61 live births.

    In January 2010 there was a significant difference in the birth rate: from 7.8 ‰ births in Sumy region to 14.5 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 18.1 in January 2009 to 16.4 in January 2010. The highest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (21.1 ), the lowest - in Kyiv city (10.7 ).

    In January 2010 there were registered 265 dead births that is by 14 cases less in comparison with the relevant period of last year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age decreased by 50 cases.


    The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age old were certain conditions arising in perinatal period, congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomes anomalies, external death situations, diseases of the nervous system, some infection and parasites diseases as illustrated in figure below. There remains a significant part of infants (4.8%) whose death cause has not been established.

Among deaths causes in January 2010 as in January 2009 the first place occupied the diseases of blood circulatory system that were followed by neoplasms and external causes.

The rate of marriages in January 2010 compared to the relevant month of last year decreased from 4.1 ‰ to 3.9 ‰, and the rate of divorces decreased from 2.6 ‰ to 2.4 ‰.

    In January 2010 the migration balance increased compared to the relevant month of 2009 by 1.5 thsd. people. The increase of migration was registered in 17 regions and its decrease in 10 regions.

    Over half of arrived to Ukraine registered their place of living in 5 regions: Odesa, Autonomic Republic of Crimea, Kyiv city, Donets`k and Kharkiv regions.
