Ukraine's population was estimated at 45923.2 thsd. people on 1 st March 2010. During the period January-February 2010 the population decreased by 39.7 thsd. people that amounted to 5.3 persons per 1000 population.
The decline in population by 42.6 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same time the increase of the population by 2.9 thsd. people due to migration was registered.
In comparison with January-February 2009 the volume of a natural decrease reduced by 1.9 thsd. people or from 6.0 ‰ to 5.7 ‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in 24 Ukrainian regions, but only in Zakarpattya, Rivne regions and Kyiv city a natural increase (322, 35 and 154 people, respectively) of the population was registered.
A natural population movement in January-February 2010 was characterized by both birth and death rates decrease and a significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live births: 100 deaths per 65 live births.

During the period January-February 2010 a significant difference in birth rate was registered: from 8.5 ‰ in Sumy region to 14.6 ‰ in Zakarpattya region that reflect the data presented in the table.

The death rate decreased from 17.2 deaths per 1000 people in January-February 2009 to 16.4 deaths in January-February 2010. The highest deaths rate was registered in Chernihiv region (21.0%), the lowest – in Kyiv city (10.6%).

In January-February 2010 there were registered 515 dead births that is by 35 deaths less in comparison with the relevant period of last year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age decreases by 63 cases.
The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were certain conditions arising in the perinatal period, congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal anomalies, external causes, diseases of nervous system, diseases of the respiratory system, some infectious and parasitic diseases as illustrated in the figure below. There remains a significant part of infants (4.5 %.) whose death cause has not been established.
Among death causes registered in the period January-February 2010 as in the
period January-February 2009 the first place occupied the diseases
of blood circulatory system that were
followed by neoplasms and external causes.

The rate of marriages in January-February 2010 in comparison with the relevant period of last year decreased from 5.4 ‰ to 4.1 ‰ and the rate of divorces decreased from 2.9 ‰ to 2.7‰
In January-February 2010 the migration balance in comparison with the relevant period of 2009 increased by 2.9 thsd. people. The increase of migration was registered in 18 regions and its decrease n in 9 regions.
