Demographic situation in Ukraine in January 2012

(from "Reports "Socio-economic situation of Ukraine in January-February 2012" )

    As of the 1st February of 2012 Ukraine's population was estimated at 45617,5 thsd. persons. During January 2012 the population decreased by 16,1 thsd. people, that amounted to 4,2 persons per 1000 population. At the same time a natural increase of the population was registered in six regions of Ukraine: Zakarpattya,Volyn, Kyiv, Rivne, ñity of Kyiv and Sevastopol (from 2,4 to 0,6 persons per 1000 population).

    The population decline by was exclusively due to natural decrease – 18,1 thsd. persons, at the same time the migration gain – 2,0 thsd. persons was registered.

    In comparison with January of 2011 the volume of a natural decrease reduced by 1,9 thsd. persons, or from 5,1 to 4,7 persons per 1000 population. A natural decrease of the population was registered in the 23 Ukraine`s regions, but only in the city of Kyiv, Zakarpattya, Rivne and Volyn regions a natural increase of the population (266, 222, 98 and 19 persons, respectively) was registered.


        A natural movement of the population in January 2012 was characterized by the increase of birth and decrease death rates.A significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live birth remains: 100 deaths per 70 live births.

       There was a significant difference in the birth rate between Ukraine's regions: from 8,3‰ in Chernihiv region to 15,4 in Zakarpattya and Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The death rate decreased from 15,7 ‰ in January of 2011 to 15,4 - in January of 2012. The heighest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (18,9‰), the lowest - in the city of Kyiv (10,1‰).

       In January 2012 there were registered 254 cases of dead births, that is by 20 cases less compared to the corresponding period of the preceding year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age deacreased by 6 cases and constituted 396 persons.

     The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were: certain conditions arising in the perinatal period; congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (congenital abnormalities); external death causes; some infectious and parasitic diseases; diseases of the nervous system; diseases of the respiratory system. There remains a significant part of infants (4,5%) whose death cause was not determined by medical personnel.

          Among death causes of the population of Ukraine in January of 2012 as in January of 2011 the diseases of blood circulatory system ranked first, neoplasms followed second and external causes took third.

    In January 2012 in 18 regions there was an increase of migration and in 9 a decrease of migration was observed.

      Almost a half of people arrived in Ukraine have registered their place of residence in 6regions: in the city of Kyiv, Odesa,Donets`k, Autonomic Republic of Crimea, Kyiv and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.

    Among those who arrived in Ukraine during January of 2012 the immigrants from the CIS countries constituted 70,8%, from other countries - 29,2%. Among those who left Ukraine 45,5 % moved to the CIS countries and 54,5% - to other countries
