Demographic situation in Ukraine in 2010

(from "Reports "Socio-economic situation in Ukraine as of January 2011" )

   As of January 1, 2011, Ukraine's population was estimated at 45778,5 thsd people. During 2010 the population decreased by 184,4 thsd. people that amounted to 4.0 persons per 1000 population.

   The population decline by 200,5 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same time, the migration gain of 16,1 thsd. people was registered.

   In comparison with 2009 the volume of a natural decrease increased by 6.3 thsd. people, or from 4.2 ‰ to 4.4 ‰. A natural decrease of the population was registered in the 23 Ukraine`s regions, but only in Kyiv city, Zakarpattya region, Rivne and Volyn` regions a natural increase of the population (3457, 3354, 2077 and 486 persons, respectively) was registered.

   A natural population movement in 2010 was characterized by birth rate decrease and a significant excess of deaths over live births: 100 deaths per 71 live births.

4 From July 2010 the information is presented according to the data of the state organs of registration of acts of civil status without taking into account divorces performed in legal form (according to the Law of Ukraine "On State Registration of Acts of Civil Status " dated from the 1st of July 2010, ¹ 2398-VI).


     There was a significant difference in the birth rate between Ukraine's regions: from 8.9 ‰ in Sumy region to 14.8 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

   The death rate decreased from 15.3 ‰ in 2009 to 15,2 - in 2010. The highest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (19.6 ‰), the lowest - in Kyiv city (10.3 ‰).

    In 2010 there were registered 3300 dead births that is by 51 cases less compared to the preceding year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age decreased by 237 cases.

   The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were: certain conditions arising in the perinatal period; congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (congenital abnormalities); external death causes; diseases of the nervous system; some infectious and parasitic diseases; diseases of the respiratory system as illustrated in the diagram below. There remains a significant part of infants (4.6 %.) whose death cause remained unestablished.

     Among death causes of the population of Ukraine in 2010 as in 2009 the diseases of blood circulatory system ranked first, neoplasms followed second and external causes took third.

    In 2010 in Ukraine the migration gain increased by 2.7 thsd. people in comparison with 2009. The migration gain increase of the population was registered in 11 regions and decrease in 16 regions.

    Almost half of people arrived in Ukraine have registered their place of residence in 5 regions: Odesa, Kyiv city, Autonomic Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.

   Among those who arrived in Ukraine during 2010 the immigrants from the CIS countries constituted 77.2 %, from other countries – 22.8 %. Among those who left Ukraine 50.9 % moved to the CIS countries and 49.1 % - to other countries.
