Ukraine's population was estimated at 45905.3 thsd. people on 1 st April 2010. During the period January-March 2010 the population decreased by 57.6 thsd. people that amounted to 5.1 persons per 1000 population.
The decline in the population by 62.1 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same time the increase of the population by 4.5 thsd. people due to migration was registered.
In comparison with the period 2009 the volume of a natural decrease reduced by 5.1 thsd. people or from 5.9 ‰ to 5.5 ‰. The natural decrease of the population was registered in 24 Ukrainian regions, but only in Zakarpattya, Rivne regions and Kyiv city a natural population increase (479, 174 and 391 people, respectively) was registered .
A natural population movement in the period January-March 2010 was characterized by both birth and death rates decrease and a significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live births: per 100 deaths per 66 live births.

During January-March 2010 there was a significant difference in the birth rate: from 8.6 ‰ in Luhans`k and Sumy regions to 14.5 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

The deaths rate decreased from 17.0 ‰ in January-March 2009 to 16.2 ‰ in January-March 2010. The highest death rate was registered in Chernihiv region (20.7 ‰), the lowest – in Kyiv city (10.5 ‰).

In January-March 2010 there were registered 789 dead births that is by 42 deaths less compared to the relevant period of last year. The number of infant death under 1 year of age decreased by 84 cases.
The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were certain conditions arising in the perinatal period, congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal anomalies, external causes, diseases of nervous system, some infection and parasites diseases, diseases of the respiratory system as illustrated in figure below. There remains a significant part of infants (4.1 %.) whose death cause has not been established.
Among the death causes in the period January-March 2010 as in the period January-March 2009 the first place occupied the diseases of blood circulatory system that were followed by neoplasms and external causes.

The rate of marriages in the period January-March 2010 compared to the relevant period of last year decreases from 4.7 ‰ to 3.6 ‰, and the rate of divorces decreased – from 3.1 ‰ to 3.0 ‰.
In January-March 2010 as in relevant period of 2009 the migration balance increased by 4.5 thsd. people. The increase of migration was registered in 19 regions and its decrease in 8 regions.

Almost half of arrived to Ukraine registered their place of living in 5 regions: Odesa, Kyiv city, Autonomic Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Dnipropetrovs`k regions.
Among arrived to Ukraine in the period January-March 2010 the immigrants from CIS countries constituted 78.4%, from other countries – 21.6%. Among those who left Ukraine 55.4% moved to CIS countries and 44.6% - to other countries.
