Demographic situation in Ukraine in 2009

(from "Report "Socio-economic situation in Ukraine as of January 2010" )

    Ukraine's population was estimated at 45962.9 thsd. people on 1 st January 2010. During 2009 the population declined by 180.8 thsd. people that amounted to 3.9 persons per 1000 population.

    The decline in population by 194.2 thsd. people was exclusively due to natural decrease, at the same an increase of 13.4 thsd. people due to migration was registered.

    In comparison with 2008 the volume of a natural decrease reduced by 49.7 thsd. people or from 5.3 to 4.2 people per 1000 population. A natural decrease of population was registered in 23 Ukrainian regions, but only in Kyiv city, Zakarpattya, Rivne and Volyn` regions a natural population increase (4196, 2632, 2129 and 662 people, respectively) was registered.

    A natural population movement in 2009 was characterized by the increase of birth rate and the decrease of death rate and a significant surplus of the number of deaths over the number of live births: 100 deaths per 73 live births.

     During 2009 there was a significant difference in the birth rate: from 9.1 ‰ in Sumy region to 15.2 ‰ in Rivne region that reflect the data in the table below.

    The death rate decreased from 16.3 ‰ in 2008 to 15.3 ‰ in 2009. The highest deaths rate was registered in Chernihiv region (19.9 ‰), the lowest – in Kyiv city (10.2 ‰).

    In 2009 there were 3350 dead births registered that is by 66 deaths less in comparison with last year. The number of infant deaths under 1 year of age decreased by 247 cases.

    The leading causes of infant death under 1 year of age were certain conditions arising in the perinatal period, congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal anomalies, external causes, diseases of nervous system, diseases of the respiratory, some infectious and parasitic diseases as illustrated in the figure below. There remained a significant part of infants (4.8 %.) whose death cause has not been established.

Among main death causes registered in 2009 as in 2008 the first place occupied the diseases of blood circulatory system that were followed by neoplasms and external causes.

   The rate of marriages in 2009 in comparison with last year decreased from 7.0 ‰ to 6.9 ‰ and the number of divorces decreased from 3.6 ‰ to 3.2 ‰.
    In 2009 in comparison with 2008 the migration balance increased by 13.4 thsd. people. The increase of migration was registered in 11 regions and its decrease in 16 regions.

    Almost half of arrived to Ukraine indicated their place of living in 5 regions: Kyiv city, Odesa, Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Donets`k and Kharkiv regions.
